Coming Home to Space: The Fifth of the 5 Master Elements
Jul 24, 2026
(Part 6 of 6 in the Five Master Elements series)
We've journeyed through Earth, Water, Fire and Air together. We've talked about grounding and flow, about transformation and breath. And now we arrive at the element that holds all of them.
Space. Or Ether (Sanskrit: Akasha)
And this one is a little different. It's both nothing and everything all at once. It's the feeling of total stillness AND what makes every other element possible.
Actually - all of life possible!
What Is the Space Element?
Space is the most subtle and most fundamental of the five elements. It's the container in which all other elements exist. Without Space, there is no room for Earth to settle, Water to flow, Fire to burn, or Air to move.
In Ayurveda, Space combines with Air to form the Vata dosha. But where Air is about movement.
It's about boundless potential.
The emptiness that contains limitless possibility.
Akasha (space) is connected to the throat chakra (Viśuddha) - the energy centre of truth, expression and communication. Which makes sense when you think about it:
To express your needs and speak your truth, you need the inner space to know what that is. When we're over-full, over-scheduled, over-stimulated, over-giving - we lose access to our own voice.
The archetypes of Space are the Teacher, the Communicator, the Sage. Those who carry wisdom and share it. Those who speak from depth rather than noise.
And to be any of those things, you need access to your quiet centre.
Signs Your Space Element Is Balanced
- You feel spacious and open to new experiences
- You can enjoy moments of nothingness - silence and stillness
- You have room to think clearly
- You can listen - to yourself and to others
- You feel connected to your intuition
- You are able to express yourself honestly
- You're not afraid of uncertainty. You don't need all the answers.
- You feel creative and open to possibility
- You have a sense of inner freedom
- You can experience solitude without feeling lonely
Signs the Space Element Is Out of Balance
When Space is excessive:
- Feeling spacey
- Disconnected or Untethered
- Feeling "out of it" or "out of body"
- Difficulty with practical tasks or groundedness
- Forgetting to eat, losing track of time, feeling unreal.
When Space is depleted
- Feeling over-full, over-whelmed or over-stimulated.
- Unable to hear yourself think
- Difficulty meditating or being still like the mind won't land anywhere
- Disconnection from intuition - that inner knowing has gone quiet. Hard to make decisions or know what to do next.
- A sense of spiritual flatness. Can't see the bigger picture.
- Physically: tight throat, difficulty expressing yourself, tension in the neck and jaw
Space Element Mudrā + Bīja Mantra
Mudrā: Ākāsha Mudrā
To enhance intuition, mental clarity, and inner freedom by removing the limitations of the mind.
Instructions
- Sit comfortably.
- Touch the tip of your middle finger to the tip of your thumb.
- Let the other fingers relax and extend gently.
- Rest the backs of your hands on your knees or thighs, palms facing upward.
- As you hold this mudra, let your awareness expand outward - rather than drawing inward as we do with other elements. Imagine yourself as the container of your experience, rather than just the content of it.
- Practice for 5–15 minutes during mediation or pranayama practice. Feeling into the openness and spaciousness on the body, mind and spirit.
Seed Sound (Bīja mantra): Ham (हं)
The mantra Ham resonates with the throat chakra (Viśuddha) and the Space element.
Chanting it softly creates vibration in the throat and chest - quite literally creating space through sound. Try it, and notice what it feels like in the moments of silence afterwards.
Ways to Work with the Space Element
You do not need to disappear to a Himalayan cave and meditate for six months to work with Akasha. Although, honestly, there are days when that sounds pretty appealing!
Here are some much more realistic ways to connect with Ether in everyday life.
1. Yoga Postures: Create Space in the Body
With Akasha, the emphasis is less about doing, and more about creating room.
Think gentle opening, spaciousness and the ability to breathe freely.
You might explore:
- Matsyasana (Fish Pose) to gently open the throat and chest
- Ustrasana (Camel Pose) with an emphasis on length rather than forcing the backbend
- Supported Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose)
- Viparita Karani (Legs Up the Wall)
- Gentle twists that create space around the ribs and spine
- Restorative poses with plenty of support and time to settle
You can also bring awareness to the spaces within each pose.
The space between the ribs.
The space around the breath.
The space inside the mouth and throat.
The space between one movement and the next.
Sometimes the most “Akasha” yoga practice is the one where you stop trying to do or achieve anything at all.
2. Pranayama: Explore the Space Between Breaths
The breath is a wonderful doorway into the Space element.
Notice the natural pause at the end of the inhale. And the natural pause at the end of the exhale.
There is no need to force or extend these pauses.
Simply notice them.
You might also explore Bhramari Pranayama, or Humming Bee Breath.
Take a gentle inhale through the nose.
Then exhale with a soft, steady humming sound.
Mmmmmmmmmm.
Feel the vibration in the face, throat and skull.
3. Create Actual Space in Your Life
This one sounds obvious... But perhaps that's because it is.
Where could you create a little more room?
Could you:
- Leave ten minutes between appointments?
- Have one evening without plans?
- Stop immediately filling every silence?
- Put your phone in another room?
- Clear one drawer?
- Say no to something you don't actually want to do?
- Leave a little white space in your diary?
I am not suggesting that you suddenly become a person who loves minimalism and owns three linen dresses. (Although if that is your thing - great!) I'm simply inviting you to notice where your life feels overcrowded.
Sometimes itt's not just the physical clutter that's the problem. Maybe it's the commitments or expectations. The old stories or other people's opinions. What's taking up space that can be released or removed?
4. Listen to Your Own Voice
Because Akasha is associated with the throat and hearing, practices of listening and expression can be incredibly powerful.
You might:
- Hum
- Chant
- Sing
- Read poetry aloud
- Talk honestly with someone you trust
- Speak a truth you have been avoiding
- Practise listening without immediately preparing your response
Ask yourself:
What am I not saying?
And perhaps even more importantly:
What do I need to hear?
Because communication is not only about speaking It is also about listening.
And sometimes, in the busyness of life, we become so used to listening to everyone else that we completely lose touch with the quiet voice inside ourselves.
5. Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra is the most beautiful practice for working with Akasha.
Lying down, supported and comfortable, you are invited to move through awareness of the body, the breath, sensations and the inner landscape.
There is nothing to achieve and nowhere to get to. You are simply resting in awareness.
6. Journal Prompts
Try writing without editing yourself - choose what resonates:
- What would I make space for if I stopped believing I had to fill every gap?
- What am I ready to release from my life?
- Where do I feel crowded or overwhelmed?
- What part of myself have I not had space to hear?
- What is trying to emerge in this new chapter of my life?
- What do I actually want more space for?
- What would I do if I trusted that not knowing was okay?
And perhaps my favourite:
What becomes possible when I stop rushing to fill the space?
7. Affirmations for the Space Element
- I create space for what truly matters to me.
- I trust what emerges in the quiet.
- I am allowed to pause.
- There is wisdom in not knowing.
- I listen deeply to my own inner voice.
- I have room to change, grow and begin again.
My Final Thoughts
Unfortunately the depleted end of the space element speactrum is where mots of us are.
We have access to so much more information, and what seems like more to do and more to process than any previous generation - brining us further and further away from the feeling of genuine emptiness. The void where anything at all is possible.
THis is why I'm so obsessed with yoga nidra and why the majority of my work has moved in that direction. It is the greatest gift ever to feel yourself as the empty space in which all of life arises. All thoughts, emotions, feelings and sensations.
When we feel ourselves as that container that all experiences come and go. We no longer attach our happiness to them. We see that sadness comes - and it goes again. It's the most freeing and liberating practice I know. If you have'nt tried it yet. Please contact me for how we can work together. Wether that's a private session or I can send you some great free resources to get you started.
With so much love and magic,Tara xx
If you'd like to go deeper with any of these practices — especially Yoga Nidra, which works with all five elements simultaneously — I'd love to guide you. You can find my free practice on the home page, or join me for the next immersion.
We've spent six posts exploring Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. And what I hope you're taking away is not a new system to master or another framework to add to your already-full mind.
It's something simpler.
The invitation is just to notice. To develop a language for what's happening in you — so that when you feel ungrounded, you know it's Earth speaking. When you feel emotionally blocked, it's Water asking for flow. When you're scattered and anxious, it's Air asking for stillness. When you're burnt out, it's Fire asking for rest.
And when you feel utterly over-full, emptied of yourself by the sheer relentless demand of everything?
That's Space. Asking you to come home.
Whatever season you're in - wherever life has brought you right now - these elements are not outside you. They are you. And the practices that work with them are not extras or luxuries.
They are the path back to yourself.
